Growing stock volume and annual forest growth are much-discussed topics \u2013 is there enough wood,\nare harvesting levels sustainable, and what different factors influence tree growth? At the Finland 100\nanniversary forest stand site, you can learn more about Finland\u2019s forest resources and peek into the\ninternal structures of wood. Individual sites offer condensed information along with links to various\nmaterials, such as videos and English content. Also nearby are over 80-year-old long-term forest growth\nexperiments.<\/p>

Noble hardwoods.<\/strong> Due to climate change,\nthe importance of expanding the forest\ntree species selection and maintaining\nbiodiversity is growing. A diverse range\nof tree species provides security in future changing\nconditions. Cultivation of native noble hardwoods is\none way to diversify our tree species composition.\nAt the noble hardwoods site, you can find basic\ninformation about noble hardwoods in a 100-year-old\noak stand.<\/p>

National Forest Inventory (NFI).<\/strong> The NFI\n(1921-) is a monitoring system for forests\nand forest resources, which produces\ninformation on land use, forest health,\nand biodiversity, as well as forest carbon stocks, in\naddition to forest resource data. The NFI site provides\nmore information about the inventory and illustrates\nthe development of our country\u2019s timber volume,\ndeadwood, large-diameter trees, and the growth and\nremoval of growing stock.<\/p>

Wood structure and new uses for wood\nraw material.<\/strong> The versatile use of wood\nraw material requires knowledge of\nwood\u2019s structure and chemical properties.\nCurrent research topics include, among others, the\nuse of tree bark and biochar. Short researcher talks\nhave been compiled at this site for viewing on mobile\ndevices, and you can also examine the internal\nstructures of the trees at the site in more detail.<\/p>

At the observation station,<\/strong> tree thickness\ngrowth, air and soil temperatures,\nradiation, and air humidity are concretely\nmeasured (IoT) \u2013 this data is openly\navailable.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Observation Station<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

At the observation station, measurements are taken of tree diameter growth, air humidity, variations in soil temperature and moisture at different depths, and light radiation.<\/p>

The measurements reveal, for example, the growth rhythms of different tree species and trees of different origins within the same species during the growing season and even throughout the day. They also uncover an interesting detail about tree water usage: the tree trunk shrinks during the day due to transpiration through the leaves and recovers at night when evaporation is minimal.<\/p>

The measurements are based on IoT technology. In IoT technology, sensors follow a programmed measurement schedule (with intervals of 10\u201360 minutes) and transmit the data to a cloud server.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
